These together are part of why I am a liberal. Because government (and non-profit) action have made fundamental changes in the world we live in for the better, and markets alone would not have accomplished this.

      • It’s pretty incredible. Is the idea that the sudden drop after 1965 is a result of the Civil Rights movement? The Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965. Since you’re unsure of the origin I can imagine if your answer is “no idea.” In any case, thanks for sharing!

  1. Actually, I asked him that at the time. This is what he said:

“no way spending could effect a shift so fast. It was something simpler: the Civil Rights Act’s Title VI plus HEW’s hospital funding. The latter was important to a lot of hospitals, and the former cut off funds to recipient institutions that were segregated by race. In just about one year, a few staffers in HEW’s Office of Civil Rights helped secure compliance of basically all of the country’s hospitals.”
